Jerzy Małek

Trumpeter, composer, producer and university academic teacher on Music Academy of Gdansk, born in Elblag in 1978. Jerzy Malek started learning the trumpet at the age of 13, after joining a local brass band. He started thorough musical education at the Music school in Elblag and continued as a student the Faculty of Jazz and Contemporary Music at the Academy of Music in Katowice.

 

He won many prices as a soloist, bandleader and composer including: Jazz and Blues Musical Contest in Gdynia 1998, International contest Katowice 2000, "Key to the Cariere" on Pomoriam Jazz Autumn, Grand Prix on Jazz Juniors Grand Prix on 2000 Krakow, 2nd Runner up on International Jazz Strugle Szczecin 2004 including musicians from USA and other coutries. Nominated in two categories: Best Composer/Arranger of 2012 and Best Jazz Musician of 2012 to Fryderyk award - Polish Phonographic Academy Awards. Jerzy is considered as one of the best Polish jazz trumpeters during last years and compared to such big names like Tomasz Stanko and Piotr Wojtasik.

 

Jerzy Malek has made a name for himself as a trumpeter playing with Polish and International icons like Michal Urbaniak, Wojciech Karolak, Tomasz Szukalski, Zbigniew Namyslowski, Leszek Mozdzer, Zbigniew Wegehaupt, Maria Schneider, Gary Bartz, Billy Harper, Steve Logan, Dan Tepfer, Eric Allen, Arild Andersen, Ziw Rawitz, Hans van Oosterhout, Lucas Pino, Troy Miller and many others.

Today, bound for a new musical direction, Malek widens the harmonic and melodic context adding rhythmic elements inspired by European folk music and contemporary multiculture sounds. 

Album “Air” features a quartet, leaving lots of space for collective improvisation and enriching means of interpretation of the trumpet.

Next album "Stalgia" recorded with great European musicians: Arild Andersen, Hans van Oosterhout, Marcin Wasilewski and David Doruzka push the music into next level.
